OFF THE RECORDS: The Triumphant Return/The Album You Need to Hear

Happy New Years everyone!

We know what you're thinking: what happened to the Globecat? Well, the big holiday rush wound up hitting everyone, including your staff here at GC, but, truth be told, there's been a project that we've been working on for close to a year now, and, with great pride, we are happy to be unveiling it to you right now.

It's called Good With Words: A Tribute to Benjamin Durdle, and its genesis has been long and totally crazy. In short, this was a project spearheaded by Evcat to give tribute to the guy who got him into songwriting/recording in the first place. Ben is a fantastic songwriter (after all, remember the track he did for Globecat's One Year Anniversary?), but he doesn't really "publicize" his songs that much. So, as such, many people were called on to record their own versions of some of Durdle's unheard-of classics, many of whom are GC alumni.

Who, you might ask? Why, there's the incredible Will Stratton, the super-fun Hoot Hoots, our friend Motorcycles Are Everywhere, and the fantastic group The Marches, along with Davecat contributing a song as well! The whole album has been a labor of love from all the artists involved, and given all the hurdles that had to be overcome to get this album released, we are pleased as punch to finally have this see the light of day.

So please, visit http://www.goodwithwordsalbum.com and download the disc (for free!), give it a listen, and blog about it/share it with your friends and family. This is one of the greatest things that GC has ever been involved in, and -- as you can see -- it was very much worth the wait :-)

Exciting interviews coming soon -- thanks for sticking around!

OFF THE RECORDS: (S)milestones

Hello there, loyal Globecat fans!

There are several wonderful things to celebrate, so let's just get it out there. First off, our humble little blog has now crossed the 10,000 hit mark, which is nothing short of incredible and worthy of mention. It's through your constant support that this has been possible, and for everyone who links us on a blog, Tweets our latest endeavor, or links a quote to an artist's Wikipedia page, we are nothing short of grateful. GC does very little self-promotion: people often stumble upon our site and champion the material, and it's for that we want to thank you.

Secondly, Globecat is taking a short break, but for good reason: co-founder Evan "Evcat" Sawdey has recently been promoted to full-on Interviews Editor at PopMatters.com. The first few weeks are invariably going to be the craziest, simply because his inbox is filled with hundreds of e-mails from dozens of publicists, so GC will take a short vacation until things settle down.

There are wonderful things on the horizon for GC, including a very special project involving several artists that can be considered "Globecat alumni" -- it's going to be a thing to behold ...

Remember to send you ideas and suggestions to globecatmusic [at] gmail [dot] com, and we will be back with you shortly!

Thanks!

OFF THE RECORDS: Evcat on NPR!

Hey there, readers!

We just wanted to let you know that Evcat is moving up in the world -- tomorrow (3.3.09), Evan is going to be on WNYC's Soundcheck program, participating in the weekly "smackdown" wherein two guests are brought in to discuss a current pop music topic. Evan, in case you didn't know, is the Associate Interviews Editor at PopMatters.com, and his review of the latest U2 album ran today, which lead to his invite onto the show. He will be going toe-to-toe with Joe Levy, the current editor-in-chief of Blender magazine and the former managing editor of Rolling Stone. It will be a great listen either way, so be sure to tune in!

UPDATE: Embedded below is the complete broadcast. Way to go, Evan!

OFF THE RECORDS: Tripped a Fan

Happy Turkey-ocalypse, everyone!

In a very short time, Globecat has become quite a little entity into itself. Between Dave, Ben, Anna, and myself, this small little interviews blog has somehow transformed into something substantial and significant, a place where people go to for the latest in-depth interviews with some of music's biggest names and newest stars. It took about a month to set everything up, but when we launched in mid-June of this year, none of us could have predicted that we'd be interviewing the likes of Rob Pollard, the Vivian Girls, Phil Elvrum (our first Aleatory ever, BTW), and so many more. Then of course came Davecat's massive, fantastic Tori Amos Comic Book Tattoo feature (have you read it?) and my crazy-epic interview with Mouse on Mars. Every day we get e-mails from publicists, bands, managers, and many many more: it never ceases to amaze us.

Yet, as you can imagine, this site has consumed quite a bit of our time, and -- especially following today's Thanksgiving feasts -- we're ready to take a little bit of a break. We're not going offline or anything (far from it); we're just taking a bit of a breather before we jump into all of the interview-filled insanity that is 2009.

So, in the interim, we want to do two things. First, we want to thank you regular fans that read us, link us, and blog us on a frequent basis -- we're intensely grateful for all of your support. Second, we want to invite you to send any new sounds, ideas, or songs to globecatmusic [at] gmail [dot] com, as we'll still be checking it on a regular basis before we relaunch in a few weeks with an expanded staff and even more fun/exciting content.

So keep it tuned right here for the latest! Thanks for helping in this wonderful year -- let's make '09 even bigger.

Thanks,
--Evcat

OFF THE RECORDS: Patting Ourselves On the Backburner

We're still awe-struck, truth be told.

When we started off Globecat, we had sky-high ambitions, hoping to interview nothing but the greats, those artists who are either bathing in the spotlight or bathing in obscurity, making good music regardless of Billboard chart rankings, all with something valuable to say. Though reaching 2000 hits might not be a milestone for many, it certainly is for us, especially considering that at the start of June, this blog did not even exist. Since then, we've interviewed the likes of Anton Newcombe, Girl Talk, Aesop Rock, the Vivian Girls, and so many spectacular artists it's almost intimidating to mention. We have our Coming Soon to Globecat feature on the top-right of the page, and though sometimes it looks kind of empty, that's only because we file things in there that are already written & completed. Behind the scenes, there are so many things at work (and so many big names being tossed around) we can barely contain our excitement ...

But, there is something that is sorely missing from Globecat, and that's you. We have been contacted by all kind of publicists, but what we really want is to hear from you guys, the fans and followers. Though many, many songs are passed around here at the Globecat offices, we want to know who you want to see interviewed. Now that we've been around for awhile (and have interviewed big names, Grammy-winners, and cult icons), we have a bit more pull, and more than likely we can fulfill whatever interview requests you might have. Link us in your blogs, help spread the word, and -- most importantly -- let us know who you want to see next on Globecat. Please e-mail us at globecatmusic [at] gmail [dot] com post-haste -- we are excited to hear what you have to say!

Keep it tuned here, as all the latest developements will be posted here before anywhere else.

And, most importantly, thank you for all the support. It helps more than you can imagine.

--Dave & Evan

OFF THE RECORDS: The Anniversary

As we post this -- our first Off the Records segment, detailing reflections and behind-the-scenes goings-ons here at Globecat -- we will officially have garnered out 666th hit, making our site officially endorsed by Satan, who, of course, is a long-standing propriator and supporter of rock and roll in general (we kid, naturally). Yet this blog is not about garnering thumbs-up from the underworld; it is -- and always will be -- about connecting musicians to listeners, with as little buffers in-between. We are on the cusp of celebrating our first month active as a site, and already we have published three interviews, six Aleatories, and have so many amazing artists lined up for future interviews it almost borders on ridiculous.

Yet our initial success wouldn't have been possible without a few things: Anncat's incredible logo, Bencat's sleek, efficient design, and especially without the interview that got this site off to its fantastic start -- Will Stratton's. It was that humble folkie's honest start that gave Globecat the leg-up it needed, all before we wound up talking to Harvey Danger, indie-icon Phil Elvrum, emerging pop hero Gotye, Japanese psych-rockers Ghost, French electro-rapper Yelle, indie-rock giants Maritime, former Clem Snide frontman Eef Barzelay, sample-heavy party-starters The Go! Team, and -- shortly after this post -- iconic music video director Mark Romanek.

Needless to say, we just want to thank our loyal readers for your support, Jay Hathaway for your incredible blog posts, and all those forum gurus and PR agents that link our work on a regular basis. We're still stunned by all that we've accomplished in the first month ... let's just see what happens in the next 11. :-)
